Champ (formerly Stryker)

Champ with familySweet, resilient Champ was a beloved family member until his family’s circumstances changed. He was taken to the shelter just for Christmas with a badly injured paw. Thankfully the shelter contacted us and Champ was soon in our tender loving care and receiving much needed medical treatment.

While Champ was healing, a very special family saw his picture and story on our website and fell in love. A very happy Champer was adopted by Colleen and Debbie — former foster parents for Safe Harbor and long-time friends and supporters of the rescue. As soon as they read about Champ, they immediately knew he was meant to be with them! He is going to be a much loved family member who will participate in many wonderful new adventures.

Pictured are Colleen (left) Debbie (right), Champ (left) and new canine sister, Molly (right), who is an honorable mention in the 2008 SHLR calendar. Champ is truly home and what a wonderful, loving home it is!

Holly

HollyLucky little Holly was adopted by Mark, Kari and Robin of Cheyenne! This sweet, athletic and happy girl was rescued from a shelter by a Good Samaritan and brought to us. Holly has stolen all our hearts and we are so happy to see her go to such a wonderful home.

Mark, Kari and their daughter, Robin, drove down from Wyoming especially to meet Holly, and it was love at first sight!  Holly’s life will be filled with love, adventure and happiness.

Mimzy (formerly Daffodil)

MimzyMimzy, our fifth and last flower puppy (formerly Daffodil) was adopted by her new family Sarah, David, Glenn, Maggie and Rigby, her new big canine brother!!  They are all SO EXCITED to bring this lovely and charming young lady into their lives. They had everything all ready for her — toys, treats, food, bed, crate, leash, collar — and most importantly, lots of love and a stay at home mom who can continue the awesome training and socialization that was started by her wonderful foster mom, Dianna, who is a professional trainer. What a great start this sweet little girl had!

Daffodil and Rigby immediately began playing in their HUGE yard and both were very happy. Mimzy will be a MUCH loved and spoiled daughter! Her new life will consist of lots of walks, hikes and going everywhere with Sarah, David and the family — it is the perfect fit for lovely flower child, Daffodil/Mimzy.

Rockie

RockieRockie was adopted by Jane and Martin (pictured here with new mom, Jane). When Jane and Martin first met Rockie, he never left Jane's side. It was the most amazing thing to see — he KNEW this was his family.

At almost 8 years old, Rockie has spent every day — year-round — all alone in a pen on a farm. He was fed and watered once a week, and was never a companion to anyone. He fended for himself. He didn't get to run and play, did not know the happiness of a walk or a gentle touch.

Here is an excerpt from a note Jane sent shortly after his adoption:

"Rocky (new spelling) is settling in quite nicely and has found a special place under the kitchen table. If his name wasn't Rocky we would be calling him G.G. for Gentle Giant. When Martin was on the computer in his office Rocky was laying by his chair or under the desk. He has learned to sit on a hand signal from us and is certainly more than eager to please. Of course he is a great big lover and my glasses haven't been clean all afternoon because I have a new glass washing service in the form of a big pink tongue. He was great in the car going home and he and Miss Kitty Meow Meow are getting along quite well.  She will not run from him and he is curious but it all seems to be working out.

What a wonderful find he is. We will take loving care of him. Martin is very happy to have this big guy in the house and they are loving each other. He has a bed by our bed and tomorrow afternoon we will head down to the Orvis store for a new dog nest for him. He carries his reindeer around every where and found the big crock that I have all the dog toys in. Of course he is so big he just dips in and helps himself. Thank you for arranging this wonderful adoption for us and having the smarts to say he is probably the right one for us. I can't believe someone would abuse this wonderful creature. He is a great addition to our family.

Thanks again. — Jane"

Dusty

DustyGorgeous 5 year old Dusty was adopted today by his forever dad, Matt! It was literally love at first sight when Matt, Dusty and Lucky — a very lucky cat that Matt rescued a few months ago — all met. Lucky was a HUGE consideration for getting just the right dog, and Dusty was that lucky boy! Matt lives directly across from a big dog park and has a lifestyle that enables him to take Dusty everywhere — including work! Dusty is just the sweetest, most calm guy — and he is so happy to be with Matt.

Dusty's story is a frightening one: he was shot when he was only 7 months old, and was relinquished to us because he was in danger of being shot again — or hit by a car — because he kept getting out of the wire fencing around the yard where he was kept all day long.

Right after the adoption Matt and Dusty were on their way to get a new leash, treats, and to go meet some friends. Dusty, you are where you deserve to be — in a forever home, with a forever dad — sleeping on the bed, riding everywhere and doing everything with your person for the rest of your wonderful life. Let's hope all dogs are eventually as blessed as you.

Bay (formerly Bailey)

BayHi everyone, just wanted to let you know that Bay (formerly Bailey) is doing quite well in her new home here in the mountains.

Bay and her K-9 brother, Cisco, are best buddies and prefer to go on walks together and like to curl up together on the dog bed (or my bed!) at the end of a long day of playing in the snow. She has been a champ at hosting the many people and dogs (12 people and 5 dogs last weekend alone!) that come to visit, and although shy at new situations at first, has warmed up well to going to the office with me. We are still working on her "come" command, but in the last week she has gotten much better so I am now able to let her off leash when we hike up the ski mountain and run the trials.

Bay is truly 7 years old going on 2. I have not been able to really tire her out yet! Thank you for letting Bay come into my life and home, she is a wonderful companion and hiking buddy!

Bud

Bud with Sue & VinceA very happy Bud was adopted by his forever home with Sue and Vince. They lost their beloved lab last week and were looking to find a new friend for 6-year-old Sheppard mix Abby – also a lucky rescued dog. Upon first meeting, Abby and Bud spent a little time getting used to each other outside. Their smart parents wisely gave them room to settle in with each other as they have recently gone through some upsetting losses — Abby with her former playmate and Bud with his home and family.

Bud is 4 years old and has lived his life as an outdoor dog. He had two run-ins with porcupines — the first time he had over 500 quills removed from him! The second time he was surrendered to the vet who cared for him until he joined Safe Harbor.

Bud is a very special boy. After his adoption, he gently put both paws up on Marie, our adoption coordinator, and gave her a kiss goodbye. He now knows that he has finally come home just in time for the holidays.

Gus

Gus with Brad & MyriamSweet, loving and labradorable GUS was adopted by his most wonderful forever parents, Brad and Myriam!

Brad and Myriam have been looking for a while for the right dog to complete their family since the loss of their beloved lab Roscoe at age 14 early this year. They were actually just planning to "meet" Gus since they are leaving to go out of town for the holidays. We were not inside their wonderful home a minute before Myriam said that she wanted to adopt him right away — they both completely fell in love with this wonderful big boy. Brad immediately called his parents who live in the area to ask if they would mind watching their new grand-dog while they are out of town and they very quickly agreed!

Our special thanks to Brad's parents and their HUGE and loving hearts for ensuring that Gus would indeed be home for the holidays with his extended family. Gus is so incredibly blessed to be with Brad and Myriam — they simply radiate warmth and affection.

Martini (formerly Tulip)

Tulip & SaraOur forth flower puppy — Martini - was adopted by her new mom, Sara. Sara came all the way down from Vail with her friend, Russ, and his dog, Kita, to meet and adopt her new canine baby girl. Tulip was cautiously pleased to meet all of them.

Martini will be a MUCH loved and spoiled daughter — she gets to go to work with her new mom and be with her all the time! Her new life will consist of lots of walks, hikes and going everywhere with Sara in the beautiful Vail Valley — sounds like a perfect place for our lovely flower child, Martini (formerly Tulip).

MartiniWe received this wonderful update from Sara:

“Martini is great! I’m having so much fun with my new girl. She went to her 1st day of puppy school on Friday and is doing well. We have had so much snow, she loves to leap like a deer through it. Thanks so much for her.”

Marley and Buck

Marley, Buck & MikeMarley AND Buck (formerly Sid and Ruffles) were adopted by their wonderful new family, Mike and Rick, and their two other canine kids, Maggie and Turbo, and two new rescued cats, too!  They recently lost their beloved lab, and when they applied for one of these boys, we told them we really wanted to place them together — and they agreed it would be best for everyone!

These gorgeous boys — who have apparently been together since they were little — were abandoned in a crowed shelter and luckily rescued by a Good Samaritan before a sad fate befell them. They came into Safe Harbor and were initially being fostered in two separate homes. We were committed to placing them together if at all possible, so we got them back together and they were just ecstatic to be with each other. Shortly after that we got an application for Marley from Mike and Rick — and the rest is history! We want to especially thank Patsy— Marley's original foster — and Sharon and Randy for taking such good care of these sweet boys, and to our wonderful intake and medical teams for all of their hard work.

Pictured are Mike and the gang!!!!  Don't they look perfect together?
