Sally Asher, a Principal Scientist and Section Supervisor for the National Center for Photovoltaics, passed away on September 3rd after a long battle with melanoma.

"Sally was a world-recognized scientist in both Photovoltaic (PV) and surface analysis communities and her technical contributions have touched nearly every technology that the NCPV works on" said NCPV Director, Ryne Raffaelle. "She will be deeply missed by her friends and colleagues."

Sally was a pivotal leader in the NCPV's Measurement and Characterization Group and managed the Surface Analysis team. During her 25-year career at NREL, she was instrumental in helping many PV companies solve difficult materials, device, processing, and reliability problems. She thrived when faced with challenging problems and extablished strong ties many PV companies as they struggled through the transition from lab-scale devices to full-scale manufacturing. Sally was an avid birder and has traveled the world to log birds on the continents. She was also an avid cyclist, completing many endurance-based rides.

An informal memorial service celebrating Sally's life has been planed for Friday, October 1, 2010, 5:30 PM until 9:00 PM. It will be held at the Arbor House at Maple Grove Park (14600 W. 32nd Ave. Golden, CO 80401). If you plan on attending, please RSVP to Bill Asher. Additional details regarding the memorial can be found at Sally's Summer Adventure Journal.

Above is a picture of our most wonderful 14-year-old Black Lab Leah. This picture was taken on a camping trip the week before she died. We are making a donation to Safe Harbor Lab Rescue in Leah's memory.

Leah was an amazing dog. She taught us all about the wornderful qualities of the Black Lab. She was brilliant and sweet, tenacious and fun-loving, caring and lovingl. We figure she knew over 200 words and phrases. She loved to play — the mountains here are littered with Leah sticks. She made up new games and taught those games to us. She took care of us. She took care of the other digs in our pack — including on elder Irish Setter with severe arthritis, a Border Collie mix who was blind and her younger Irish Setter brother who had total hip replacement surgery because of sever hip dysplasia. She was sensitive to all their needs, demanding their vets to take good care of them — as well as sensitive to our needs.

We appreciate the work you do and the honor you bring to Black Labs.
