WoodyIn memory of Woody (7/9/95-3/14/08)

I miss you Woody. You were truly brought to love me like no one ever has. You have been by my side through it all. I miss the way you would talk to me with your funny sounds. Most of all, I miss the voice of your eyes as they would peer in to my soul, blanketing me with a peace…& a profound sentiment of the mysterious simplicity of love.

I can still feel the warmth of your fur, as I would bury my face in your neck. Woody, you will always be a precious jewel on the crown of my life. Thank you for being everything you were, you are and you will be to me. I love you Woody Bear!

Forever and always,

Suzi (Mama) xoxo

Brought to Love You
by Suzanne Jouvenat

The paw prints will forever echo
in our soul.
The gaze upon which a communication
could not be more clear.
Knowing us
in all of our ugliness,
yet only seeing our beauty.

A beauty within ourselves
that we cannot find on our own,
one we did not realize was present
until our most loyal
reflected it back to us.

Lying content at our feet
and so proud to do so.
The only being
solely interested in our journey
not at all for themselves,
rather only for ourselves.

Brought to us as heartbeats of love
swathed in a furry case,
yet not to be contained…
It is spoken without words,
felt by breathing,
present at all times.

The permanence of this paw print
on our soul enriches us
to love as we ought
to give voice to the silence
we can only hear without listening.

LukeIn memory of Luke

He is loved and missed by all of us.

Love,

Colleen, Debbie, Molly, Champ and Beamer

KennaIn memory of Kenna

Kenna was such a gentle soul, she was extremely intuitive and caring — an incredibly sweet girl. Although she dealt with health challenges that would have brought down the strongest, she was always happy and looking forward to what might come next. Although her tail was always wagging, it was her full body shimmy that kept everyone smiling. A wonderful companion with the biggest heart — she will be missed dearly.

HarleyIn memory of Harley Dudley Johnson

We miss you so much, Harley. You always loved Christmas and unwrapping presents, and we were sad you weren't with us this year. We miss having you retrieve the newspaper every morning, and we miss going on walks around the field. We remember how much you loved being brushed and vacuumed. We miss having you in the car and truck with us as you loved to go anywhere at anytime. You were such a good eater and you always licked our plates before they were put into the dishwasher.

We have fond memories of you grabbing Beanie Babies and running with them so that we would chase you. You were such a good boy, and you loved everybody and every dog you met. We called you "Happy Harley." We are very thankful for the 12 years you were with us, and we know that now you rest in peace without pain. We loved you so much, and you will be in our hearts forever.

Ron Dahlberg photoIn memory of Ron Dahlberg

Ron, age 70, was a loving husband and father of four. He was married to his wife Barbara for over 50 years and was thrilled with his darling granddaughter — Lauren Marie, age 17 months. Ron spent the early part of his career in banking, which provided a great foundation for his later entrepreneurial pursuits.

He had two successful businesses — one in the home improvement and construction industry for 12 years and the other as a professional dog trainer for the last 20 years. He had a strong passion for training Labrador Retrievers and earned over 100 AKC hunt test titles and placed in numerous field trials.

In addition to dog training, he touched many young lives coaching little league basketball, baseball and football, including Junior Olympic basketball. Ron was also a very generous man — generous with his time and talents and always willing to help those around him. He had many lifelong friends and could always be counted on to make people laugh. He will be greatly missed by many friends and loved ones.

Chevy and John BramlageIn memory of John Smith

Chevy runs tirelessly for hours, kicking up birds through fields of thick brush . . .

This too can be said about John. He worked endlessly at work and play, as he was an entrepreneur and a lover of the "hunt." From holding the honor of Head Master Councilor of Demolay while in college at the University of Kansas, to being a caring and loving father, good friend, cherished grandfather, successful businessman and most proudly an accomplished hunter, John was a remarkable man. John most treasured his bird hunts with Chevy, his Labrador Retriever, as they were partners in a job well done.

John was loved by many for his caring nature, humor and quick wit. He had a roaring laugh that was contagious. He also had a serious side, both having taught us all many valuable lessons. John enjoyed being in the company of friends and family. He took pride in teaching new business people how to achieve their goals, almost as much as he enjoyed learning from his peers.

It's hard to say goodbye, especially when a life has been taken so early and unfairly. In loving memory of our Dad, friend, son, brother and grandfather, John T. Smith. October 26 th 1946 to December 16, 2007.

Pudge

In memory of Pudge

—a big goofball of a chocolate Lab who brought more entertainment and joy into my life than probably any other dog I've ever had.

Pudge endured health problems that would have felled the positive nature in any of us—allergies, thyroid disease, auto-immune disease, two rebuilt ACL's—but she remained happy through it all.  She was, in fact, the happiest dog I have ever known. Every day was an adventure, every person or animal a friend (except maybe the neighborhood foxes). She loved everything, even going to the vet, but especially a good swim, a new toy, an aggressive belly rub, a sniff filled walk in the woods or a ride in the truck with the windows down.

That great big heart of hers finally gave out. She left us on her own terms, peacefully resting on a big fluffy quilt at the vet's while we were waiting to hear back from the cardiologist.

She made people laugh, as this was her best talent, right up to the very end. She wagged her tail at everybody else in the vet's waiting room, made an effort to steal a little fluffy dog's squeaky toy and tried one last time to get into the fish tank in the vet's waiting room that always mesmerized her.

She will be greatly missed by everyone and everything that knew her, including me and Sam, her 14 year old black Lab housemate.

Thank you for bringing Pudge into my life.

Libby Brown

In memory of my sweet Libby

Such a rough first five or six years in that puppy mill near Berthoud.  And you were one of the few survivors.

I hope the few (too few) years with me helped to make up for it.  I did see you lying in that sunny spot on my bed a lot, with your feet in the air.  And you were a very good wiggler when you got silly.  No one else saw this but me because you would hide when anyone else came over.  But I saw it.

I'll always love you, Libbidy Cricket.
Love, Les

A Tribute to Libby Brown

Libby Brown had the sweetest face I have ever seen.
She was a devoted friend to her person and a gentle
mom to all of her fellow friends. Despite a tragic
beginning at a puppy mill, Libby seemed to hold no
grudges. She was a soulful, sensitive, and endearing
girl and it was an honor to have known her.
Barbara  Pratt, Libby’s “Aunt”.

Reese

In memory of Reese

We adopted Reese on December 19, 2004,through Safe Harbor Lab Resuce when he was 5 1/2 years old. We knew from the moment we met him, he was going to be a very special part of our family. He was very smart. He loved going to the pet store and picking out a stuffed toy. With over a dozen in his wicker basket at home, he knew them all by name and would go get the one we told him to find. He loved giving hugs to us. Hiking, camping, running on our mountain property in Pine, CO and of course, fetching his favorite rope toy were what Reese loved to do.

On May 23, 2007, Reese passed away from a huge cancerous tumor with only finding out he had it the day before. He never showed that he was in pain. What a tough boy!

Even though his time with us was short, we have many very happy memories of Reese and miss him terribly.

His ashes are spread on his favorite place up in the mountains. May he rest in peace.

Thank you Safe Harbor for bringing Reese into our lives. His memory will live forever.

Sophie

Sweet Sophie, my spiz spiza “prairie dog!”

Tokasila “Grandfather Spirit” brought our paths together nearly 10 years ago in that remote and unforgiving spot on the reservation.  I believe that it was no accident that you crawled out of the tall prairie grasses on that day.  There was a beautiful and divine plan for your life and ours together.  Even though you were so tiny and starved and your body was broken, it was clear looking into those beautiful, soulful eyes that you were very special among Sunkas “dogs”, yet who knew that you would teach us so much about facing each day with a happy heart, no matter what pain of body or soul would come our way.

You taught us that true happiness is so very simple and can be experienced everywhere—in the pile of stuffy toys and tennis balls that you carried around with you wherever you went—in the joy of a puddle of rainwater—in the wind that blew in your face as you rode with your head out the window of our car.  Whenever anyone of your “two-legged” family were sad, you did something so incredibly silly that we could not help but laugh.  You took care of us unselfishly, unconditionally, and joyfully.  And even now as we begin to heal from losing you in this world, you have reached out and sent “Lucas” to us.  We have no doubt that you had a paw in seeing to it that he came specifically to us.

On April 4th, Tokasila looked at all the dogs in the world and decided that you would be among those he would bring home that day.  Now instead of lying next to us, your head on our laps, you lay by his side and you watch and you wait. One day, each of your two-legged family members will take her own journey across the water to the spirit world.  In the distance we will see you on the shore barking, your tail going ‘round and ‘round with joy as it did all your life with us!  We will see that you are no longer in pain and we’ll be so very happy, Sophie!  When each of us in our own time floats closer to you on that spirit shore, you will jump in the water and swim out to meet us and to guide us home.  Until that day sweet Sophie, whenever we think of you, our hearts will be happy.

Love Always,

Denise and Kelly Middlebrook.

Manitou

The following letter is in tribute to Manitou:

Dear Safe Harbor,

On Nov 29, 2003 I was in a terrible car accident. My car rolled twice and my dogs were with me (they are always with me). My dearest and closest friend in the world, my Manitou, who was born in my hands on 5/29/98 and died in my arms on 11/29/03 was killed in the accident. The pain from the loss of her is still so huge... we were so very close... Our connection was like no other that I have experienced with my animal companions.

I send this check in her memory for you to help other labs in need, especially Nikita and Lucy. I also enclose a picture of my friend. She was a real beauty as you can see.

I can't imagine life without a lab. Perhaps when Nikita or Lucy are ready to go to a home, I might be ready.

With highest regard,

-- Samantha

Yukon --David's Puppy--

YukonYukon was born October 23, 2002. He left this earth but not our hearts on March 9, 2003. He was here for such a short time but was so loved.

In Yukon’s four and a half months of life he showed his family and friends unconditional love and trust. He thrived on “rough-house” play with the family’s 10-year-old American Eskimo named Pearl. Yukon was very intelligent and was responding quickly to all of his puppy training, making him a wonderful young companion. He especially loved when his “mom” greeted him with kisses on his nose.

He gave us love, joy and laughter. Yukon will be greatly missed. It will do my broken heart good to know this donation will benefit other Labs.

–-Susan, Yukon’s Nanny

Buddy

BuddyIn 2002, Buddy's mom began watching the changing lives of Safe Harbor Labs. She was especially happy when she learned that our reigning senior at the time, Juma, had found a wonderful home. She made a donation in honor of her own senior gent, Buddy, and we fell in love with his handsome mug.

We were so sad to learn that Buddy crossed the Rainbow Bridge on January 4, 2003. He was nearly 14. And he had seen it all. True love and companionship. Joy. And sickness. He beat cancer twice and he had a seizure disorder. In his last years, he had difficulty with incontinence and sported custom-fitted Depends. Attached with duct tape, he looked like a little prize-fighter! Here's an excerpt from a letter we received from Buddy's mom:

"...We've always felt the heavens were proud the day they made our Bud. We've always felt so very blessed that Buddy was ours and thankful that we were able to protect him from harm. Your website has been so comforting to us. When we read about the different stories, for example, Aries' struggles, Bell's adoption of Lola, Annie's folks adopting Chester, and dear Bodie in a good home, it helps us to again be grateful for the blessings we had. Reading the Success Stories helps keep our hearts hopeful. Thank you.

We would like to make a contribution as a memorial to Buddy. Hopefully, this 'Buddy Fund' can help towards Aries' care and the other Labradors your rescue group does so much for."

--Nancy and Jeff

We are touched and grateful for this memorial contribution. It has made a meaningful difference in the lives of several of our Labs, especially Aries. We don't know what the future holds for Aries, but it comforts us to know that should she cross the Rainbow Bridge, that Buddy will be there to greet her.

Her good nature inspired many to adopt a rescued animal. We’re grateful for the efforts of her “mom and dad” in the world of Rescue, for they have saved countless animal lives.
