You’d have to look far and wide to find a more perfect pair of Lab sisters than the lovely and distinguished Julia and her gorgeous baby sis, Ginger. Sweet and spicy Ginger is the new addition to Dana and Jeff’s family, and despite a few earlier detours she is clearly now right where she belongs.

Ginger’s new parents tell us:

Ginger (formerly Helen) came into our lives on June 29th at around 6 months old, rescued from somewhere in Arkansas. Despite just a short stay with her foster parents, she came to us with glowing reviews, and she has more than lived up to those! She loves her older sister, Julia, a nine-year-old Labrador (and SHLR alumni 8 years ago).  They have thoroughly bonded through daily walks in our foothills’ neighborhood and on the trails in the Fraser Valley. Ginger is still figuring out these ‘big dogs’ (deer and elk) that we often see, thinking, ‘…do I ignore them like Julia, or bark at them for being in my yard?’

Ginger keeps herself busy with toys while we have morning coffee but is ready to roll whenever the leashes come out. We also decided to work with a trainer, and she has an incredible capacity for learning and loves to please. It’s also been a great refresher for Julia (and us!), as we were all a bit rusty on using consistent commands and rewards for showing the right behaviors.

Ginger has stunning hazel eyes, a beautiful namesake coat, long legs, and a tail that curls with some darker striations. “What are you?”, was something we said a lot during our first month together, so we pulled the trigger on a DNA test which is in progress at this writing. While we are pretty sure she has a good percentage of Labrador Retriever, we are also thinking there’s some Shephard and maybe Vizsla genes in there. Whatever her percentages turn out to be, we know she is 100% joyful and has been a wonderful addition to our family. Thanks again Safe Harbor for the amazing work you do!

Many thanks to Penny for fostering Ginger/Helen!
