Sometimes you don’t know what you need until you have it. Becky and Paul thought they wanted another chocolate lab to fill the empty space left by the loss of their last dog, but instead, they found River. He is a five-year old black lab that has run through their hearts since day one in his new forever home. Like his namesake, he has many twists and bends that make him the great dog they needed.
Becky and Paul gave us an update:
This was written after only 11 days of this angel entering our lives.
We helped our Chocolate lab cross the rainbow bridge in October. I’ve heard it said that when you lose such a treasured friend, he takes a place in your heart and resides there forever. Our hearts now have three such spots, not counting the dogs we had as kids. The house was not the same without a dog, so the search was on, and soon Safe Harbor brought us a beautiful black lab named Lincoln. Our house became a home again the moment his four paws entered the front door. He is not the Chocolate we were hoping for, but we felt his personality matched what we needed, and every day he proves himself worthy. Let’s be clear, he is not perfect — yet — he has only been with us 11 days! You can tell he is still dealing with the demons of his past, but despite that, he is loving and I’d say, he’s the best lab ever. It is apparent that he was loved and had basic obedience training. He is willing to learn, loves his toys (as he learns the “Don’t break it” command), eats with gusto, enthusiastically jumps into the truck for a ride, and snuggles on the couch after supper. As he gets accustomed to the fact that we are here for him, and that this is his forever home, I’m sure he will blossom fully into the great dog that lives in his soul. Thank you to all the volunteers of Safe Harbor for all you do to rescue these dogs and send them off to their forever homes! We are forever grateful. And so is Lincoln, who has been renamed River because he is always “floating” around us!
Thanks to Sam and Jenn for fostering River/Lincoln, and thanks to Ronda and Steve for the respite fostering!
